Voices from the sea
Award winning novel by Guillermo Munro
In the spring of 1943, the body of a young man, Alejandro Palacio -his throat slit by a knife-
, appears in a ravine in the Sonoran desert. That same year, a child related to the
deceased is born, and a coincidence becomes destiny; 41years later, the child, now a
grown man begins to investigate… was it a murder or suicide? Why was Alejandro
Running? From who or what was he running away from?
The author spent time gathering the voices rising from the sea, and through them, he has
reconstructed key events in the history of Northern Mexico. The novel focus around the
mysterious death of Alejandro Palacio, the comings and goings that weave their way
around it, along with the ups and downs, downfalls and joys of a community of nomads of
various origins including Irish, Mexican Mestizos, North Americans and Chinese, along
with Yaqui and Seri Indians.
In his investigation, the author tells the feats, endurance and solitude of the Munro and
Palacio families in the desolate fishing landscape of Sonora at the beginning of the twenty
century, two families united trough love and hardship; at the same time, we learn of their
living side by side with the Yaqui and Seri Indians on those years of violent times and
social changes: the Mexican revolution, the persecution of the Chinese and of the church,
years of struggle, of prohibition and contraband… the Great depression.
Voices from the sea was awarded recognition as the best novel in 1992. It is now
translated to English and waiting to be published.
